With over 17 years of specialized experience in chromatography resin development and downstream bioprocessing for biopharmaceuticals, Mr. Shigeyuki Aoyama serves as Chief Technical Advisor at Biotrum Inc., where he plays a strategic role in shaping the company’s technology roadmap and product innovation.

Mr. Aoyama’s distinguished career began at JNC Corporation (formerly Chisso Corporation) in Japan, where he contributed significantly to the research, engineering, and global commercialization of Cellufine™ — one of Asia’s most respected chromatography resin platforms. As Group Leader of the Cellufine R&D division, he led the development of the 2nd generation Cellufine MAX series, known for its enhanced dynamic binding capacities, improved flow properties, and virus clearance capabilities — key parameters for large-scale monoclonal antibody purification.

Throughout his tenure at JNC:

  • He led cross-functional R&D teams across Japan, resulting in the launch of over 6 commercial-grade resin products, including specialized ligands for virus removal and mixed-mode purification.
  • As Manager of Manufacturing Engineering, he implemented process optimizations that reduced batch variability by ~30%, improved resin uniformity, and increased overall manufacturing yield.
  • In his 7 years as Sales Development Manager, Mr. Aoyama successfully expanded Cellufine's market reach across Asia and the United States, working closely with major biologics manufacturers and CROs.

His technical expertise is backed by peer-reviewed publications on ligand chemistry and viral clearance applications, including:

  • J. Chromatogr. B (2022) – Mixed-mode chromatography for monoclonal antibody purification
  • J. Virol. Methods (2021) – Virus and prion protein removal using PEI-modified resins
  • Microbiol. Immunol. (2012) – Influenza virus purification for vaccine production using Cellufine sulfate
  • With a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from Kyushu University, Mr. Aoyama combines a deep scientific background with hands-on industrial insight. At Biotrum, he contributes to the design of next-generation resins and purification systems, leveraging his decades-long experience to ensure product excellence, regulatory compliance, and competitive advantage in global markets.
